Hewlett train station to get safety enhancements
The West Broadway train crossing in Hewlett, part of the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), recently received $1.91 million for closed circuit television cameras as part of the $5 million safety grant that the Metropolitan Transit Authority will be awarded by the Federal Railroad Administration.
Meredith Daniels, a spokesperson for the LIRR, said that the cameras will be installed next year. They will record grade crossing movements so as to enable better operation of the railroad and ensure safety and security.
Senator Charles Schumer stated in a media release that measures such as improving education, making smart upgrades to dangerous grade crossings, and prioritizing a culture of safety are all the types of steps that need to be taken to improve safety on the railroads. This investment by the Federal Railroad Administration will go a long way to reaching that goal, he said.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand added that the prevention of future accidents and the improvement of safety for the many New Yorkers who travel on passenger and commuter trains every day, and drive across dangerous rail crossings, will be helped by this investment. Rail crossings and the railways in general can be kept safe by upgrading crossing signals, roadways, and signage.
The Long Island Railroad may look to a local print company for the creation of such signage and other materials that can inform travelers of the upgrades that will be taking place.
