Hewlett school gives recognition to octet of alumni

The Hewlett-Woodmere Alumni Association (HWAA) Hall of Fame will be inducting eight graduates of Hewlett High School in a special ceremony later this month.

The inductees are Joan E. Kahr, Jill Weinick Iscol, Roy Steinberg, Roger H. Kahn, Dr. Kenneth Boockvar, Kathryn Boockvar, Daniel Boockvar, and Calum Pasqua.

Kahr is a prominent historian of the decorative arts and founded the Joan Kahr School of Dance based in Woodmere.

Iscol is president of the IF Hummingbird Foundation, an organization with the goal of strengthening democracy and reducing economic, educational and social inequalities throughout the world.

Steinburg is an actor, director, producer, and educator in stage, television and film and has received several awards in his industry.

Kahn is a championship swimmer and has earned several medals in the summer nationals and the Pan Am Games.

Dr. Boockvar developed the Early Warning Instrument to find the early sign of acute illness. His sister Kathryn has an extensive background in public interest law and uses it to give back to the community. His brother Daniel founded, and is in charge of, the Mayer Foundation, which provides grants to needy individuals.

Finally, Pasqua is the director of the orchestra at the school and is a renowned fiddler competing against some experts of the instrument in Scotland.

The induction ceremony will be a brunch at Hewlett High School this Sunday, April 26. The Alumni Association may be turning to local print companies to help with creating a brochure, listing the inductees along with a brief description of the accomplishments of each.
