What's Happening in Hewlett, NY…

Hempstead to offer ensemble performance

The American Chamber Ensemble (ACE) will host its “Portraits of Black Composers” concert next month. Anyone from Hewlett and other areas in Hempstead is welcome to join.

ACE was formed by Blanche Abram, a pianist, and Naomi Drucker, a clarinetist. The ensemble’s is to explore and perform chamber music, which is a kind of classical music composed for smaller ensembles. Working with freelance musicians, ACE has given performances since 1965.

At “Portraits of Black Composers,” guests can expect the sounds of famous African American composers. The concert will feature music from Duke Ellington, Nathaniel Dett, Scott Joplin, and William Grant Still. Working with ACE is Eglevsky Ballet, a ballet group that will accompany the music with dance performances.

Depending on the developments surrounding the COVID-19 situation, the concert will either be performed in-person or online. If conditions allow for a live performance, ACE will include a multi-media experience that enhances immersion and provides an alternative way to enjoy concerts. Also, future concerts might be announced if live performances can continue. These events are usually supported through flyer printing, so guests can look out for flyers if performances continue.

If the concert takes place in-person, it will happen at the Monroe Lecture Center Theater at Hofstra University. The date of the concert is March 7, and it starts at 3:00 PM. Tickets are $20 for the general audiences and $15 for seniors and non-Hofstra students with identification.
