Helping hands sought for Hewlett area project
Invasive vines can be a real problem in the green spaces in and around Hewlett, but a hands-on environmental service project will tackle this issue directly.
The Forest Park Winter Vine Sweep will hit the venue’s natural areas in search of invasive vines. The scheduled runtime for the session is two hours, and everyone is reminded to dress in layers and bring sturdy gloves.
The volunteers will be removing any invasive vines they find, and this can benefit the native trees, shrubs and other plants that grow at the site. Doing so before they leaf out in the spring will allow young plants a chance to get lots of sunlight, and before they tackle the project, the attendees will learn about biodiversity and the forest's rejuvenation cycle. The host for the session can be contacted by calling 718-235-4100.
An environmental service activity gives the public an opportunity to give Mother Nature a helping hand. Waivers, letterheads, and other business stationery for a group that hosts in-person activities can be crafted by area printers.
This morning of giving Forest Park some love will take place this Saturday, February 24. The group will hit the trails at 10:00 am, and anyone who plans on coming out has been asked to register in advance, as this will aid the organizers. There is no fee to participate.
