What's Happening in Hewlett, NY…

East Rockaway gets energy upgrades

Continuing through May and over the next few months, Johnson Controls is upgrading 745 street light fixtures in the Village of East Rockaway, just a short distance from Hewlett, in an effort to save the Village over $2m in energy costs.

High-wattage high-pressure sodium streetlights in the Village are being replaced with LED fixtures with lower wattages. Illumination along the streets will be enhanced with the new LED street lights and will provide a longer rated life for the lights, less maintenance and increased energy efficiency.

Johnson Controls is also involved in several other infrastructure improvement projects for the seven municipal buildings in the Village. These include sealing wall and roof joints, installing programmable thermostats for saving energy, retrofitting occupancy sensors, ballasts, and lamps for interior lighting, and installing insulation around pipes and valves.

According to Mayor Bruno Romano, it is guaranteed that the Village will save over $2m over the term of the energy performance contract, which is 18 years in length. There is no cost to taxpayers for the project given the savings in energy that will be achieved. In addition, PSEG Long Island awarded the Village a $32,000 rebate for energy-efficient lighting and lighting controls.

The Village may want to print flyers to describe all the benefits of this project to residents and what they will see over the coming months.
