Citywide video contest won by Far Rockaway school
P.S. 43 in Far Rockaway, just a short distance from Hewlett, was recently awarded $10,000 as the grand prize winner in a contest across New York City sponsored by the MCU credit union.
Four students from the school created a three-minute video on what they would do to build a better school. Criteria for judging the videos included the attitude of the students and their collaborative effort in creating the videos, the needs of the school, the creativity of the project and how the project will strengthen the community of the school.
A Vice President at the United Federation of Teachers, Sterling Roberson, said that the union will be matching the original award with another $10,000, as it was very impressed by the video. The students plan to use the funds towards purchasing new technology.
On Friday, October 17, an award ceremony was held and attended by the students now in high school. One of them commented that they wanted to do something to help the school by means of the video.
The Council of School Supervisors and Administrators announced at the assembly that it would be also donating $5,000 for books in the classroom. Poster printing may be used to spread word throughout the community about these funds that will be coming into the school system to support it.
