Adelphi welcomes first woman president
Adelphi University, located in Garden City just a short distance from Hewlett, recently announced its 10th university president, Dr. Christine Riordan, who is the first female president in its 118-year history.
Riordan commented that she was much honored to be given the chance to move Adelphi to the next stage as a model metropolitan university. She comes from the University of Kentucky, where she was its provost since 2013. While there, she helped to expand live and learn programs in residences, refine the financial system, work on new marketing techniques for admissions, and focus on the retention rates of the 30,000 students in the school.
According to Dr. N. Gerry House, who was on the search committee for the university, Riordan is a nationally recognized leader with regard to research, scholarship, and writing in higher education. He adds that the committee was moved by her emphasis on innovative experiential learning and collaboration across disciplines.
He continued that the university is looking forward to working with her as she looks to create an exciting new direction for both undergraduate and graduate students at the university.
The university will likely call upon printing companies to provide flyers and mailers notifying the current student body, incoming freshmen, and the community of the appointment.
Riordan, who will be assuming her position on July 1, is replacing President Dr. Robert Scott.
