Girls start month on the move

In Flemington, almost 1,700 runners participated in the Girls on the Run 5k on June 1.

The course both started and ended near the old courthouse on Main Street, and the race itself was put on by the Bucks, Warren, and Hunterdon chapter of the Girls on the Run organization. Sue Lehrer served as race director.

The organization itself focuses on boosting girls in 3th grade through 8th grade, and many girls of that age participated in the race. Supporting them were plenty of boys, as well as adult male and female runners. The first to cross the finish line was Riley McCarten, a Lebanon 18-year old, while the first girl to complete the race was Amy Wood of Hackettstown, who is 10 years old.

Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization that believes running helps girls activate their potential and teaches them to pursue their dreams with boldness. Many adult runners support the organization by running other events to donate funds to Girls on the Run; those interested in doing so should view the organization’s website for information on volunteering.
