What's Happening in Flemington, NJ…

Eastern phoebes and barn swallows are welcome feathered friends for many people, as they are highly effective insect catchers. Inviting them into the yard can be quite easy, and a Flemington workshop can show how.

Both phoebes and swallows eat a lot of flying insects every day. However, since these birds tend to nest in old barns and other large abandoned buildings, and since these have been disappearing from the landscape, they are often finding themselves with nowhere to raise a family. The participants in the workshop will learn what they can do to help, and it will be a hands-on activity.

The group will be constructing nesting platforms, as these will provide a suitable surface for phoebes and swallows to use as the base for their mud nests. They will also find out where to place these structures so that they can be utilized by the birds, as well as other tips for inviting them onto a property.

An event like this can be a simple way to introduce the public to grass roots environmental action while having fun. Instructions for building the nesting platforms can be given out to the attendees so they can make additional ones at home, and Print shops will be able to supply them.

This workshop, which will lend a hand to some of Flemington’s birds who are in need of nesting sites, will be offered on February 20. Echo Hill Park will be the location for the activity.
