The annual Hunterdon County 4-H sheep show was held by the Sheep Club on August 21 at the 4-H and Agricultural Fair, and Flemington farmers put it a strong performance.
The NJ Hampshire Sheep Association presented the award for best registered Hampshire to Ben Sheneman’s fall ewe lamb. Sheneman, a Flemington resident, also received the award for the best farm-owned and farm–bred animal in the show, given by Helen Buchanan, in memory of her husband William.
Sergeantsville Grain & Feed presented Gift Certificates and champion rosettes to a variety of members at the event. Some companies present small gift Bags to winners at events like this, and might visit a Print company to create a gift bag of promotional items and coupons.
Other winners at the event included Gabby Tovar from Pittsdown, with a Southdown ram lamb, a Suffolk ram lamb, and Suffolk and Southdown ewes, both of which were yearlings. Laila Shehab from Hopewell scooped a prize with her Lincoln ewe and ram lambs, Rebecca Kornhaber of Flemington had an award-winning Shetland ewe and Dorset ewe lamb, while fellow Flemington representative Teresa Coppola was rewarded for her Border Leicester ewe.
A variety of special awards were given for categories, such as best animal of meat breeds, highest placing wool breed animal, and the Young Exhibitors’ Flock. Awards were also given for fitting and showmanship.
