A Flemington area evening event will be focused on moths, and will introduce members of the public to this diverse and economically important group of insects.
While butterflies are widely admired for their beauty, their lesser known cousins can be every bit as beautiful and fascinating. The more than 2500 species of moth that call New Jersey home will be in the spotlight during a presentation scheduled at Hunterdon County Arboretum. The audience can develop a greater understanding and appreciation of these usually nocturnal creatures, and if the weather cooperates, the group may even have a chance to head outdoors and view moths in the wild.
Biologist Jill Dodds will serve as the facilitator for the session, which will include a PowerPoint presentation of a selection of her moth photographs she has taken throughout the state. She will discuss their biology and offer tips that can help the audience members spot these tiny Flyers in their own yard or when out for an after dark walk.
This workshop is intended for those who are age eight and above, and tickets are $3 each. Many moths can be difficult to find and identify, and offering the participants in this sort of activity moth ID cards prepared ahead of time by a printing services supplier can make it easier for them to spot them on their own.
This late spring presentation will be giving moths their time in the spotlight on June 4. It will be on offer at Hunterdon County Arboretum.
