Tapping sugar maples for their sap is a practice that was first undertaken by First Nations people many years ago. Today, it still takes place in sugar bushes, including those in the Flemington area.
Duke Farms is celebrating another sugaring off with a day of activities that will demonstrate how maple sap is sustainably harvested and then boiled down to make syrup, sugar, taffy maple butter, and many other products. While the guests explore the site, they may also be lucky enough to observe some of its wildlife active even during the winter months.
While the event will be focused on the harvest of maple sap, it will also provide an opportunity to learn how climate change and other issues can affect sugar maple trees. Before they go home, the guests will be welcome to purchase a bottle of maple syrup that has been produced in the state.
When they arrive at Duke Farm, ticket holders for the occasion are asked to head to the tent at the Orientation Center to check in. Stationery printers can supply maps of the site, as well as informative Brochures, Signs ,and other items that can help to make the occasion a big success.
This year's Sugar Maple Celebration will be held on February 9. There are several different start times to choose from.
