Middlesex County history buffs will note that later this month, the Highland Park Historical Society will be presenting a free program entitled ‘History Time Line’, displaying various aspects of the area’s rich past. People of all ages and interests are welcome to attend.
Historians will be on hand to discuss everything from John Inian’s ferry service between Highland Park and New Brunswick in 1685 to the area’s first structure – a tavern built in the 1700s. Highlights will also cover the area’s first toll bridge, built in 1795. Other local experts will be holding discussions on such local landmarks as the Essex-Middesex Turnpike, the origins of Livingston manor, the coming of the New Jersey Railroad, the purchase of the Albany Street Bridge, Highland Park’s first schoolhouse, and the first grocery store on Raritan Avenue.
There will also be discussions and presentations regarding events of the 1900s, such as the history of our local firehouse, the establishment of the Borough of Highland Park, its police department, and the Post Office. Other local people will be giving talks covering the time period since the year 2,000. History buffs may wish to exchange digital Business Cards with other like-minded enthusiasts.
The presentations will be given Sunday, June 15th, from 10am to 4pm at the Highland Park Senior Center, 220 South 6th Avenue, Highland Park. Historic photos will also be on display throughout the center.Get a Free Quote for Business Cards
