An event is now on the schedule in Edison that will allow people to help others.

The American Red Cross has said it needs blood donors for procedures, including surgeries, even as the pandemic comes under control. The greatest need is for platelet donations, which are typically used to help cancer patients, particularly those undergoing chemotherapy treatments. Donations of platelets must be used within five days, so their brief shelf life means there is always a demand for them. The need is becoming acute because some cancer patients who had to forego or delay procedures due to the pandemic are now rescheduling those appointments.

The Red Cross needs blood of all types, but type O is in high demand, since it is considered the “universal” type that is least likely to cause a reaction when used. Donors who have had their coronavirus vaccination are welcome to donate, if they feel well, are free of symptoms, and can provide the name of the vaccine manufacturer. Once a person has been vaccinated, there is no waiting period before they can give blood.

Donors in most states must be in good health, weigh 110 pounds at the least, and aged at least 17, though 16- year-olds can donate in some states, but they need parental consent.

The blood drive is set for June 21, from 9.00 am until 2.00 pm, at American Legion Post 435 on Oakland Avenue. Poster printing can help make communities aware of events like this.
