Grant program enables residents to give back to community

The third annual Park Partners Community Grant Program of the borough of Highland Park recently made its awards for this year public.

The program gives up to $2,000 for a project that benefits the community, and is designed to encourage residents to get more involved in their community and participate in government.

There are five categories for the projects—arts, environment, culture, diversity, and safety. Residents and organizations within the borough initiate, plan, and execute the projects, which must be completed within a year.

The residents vote for their favorite proposal in each category after they view presentations from the applicants. Some use computers to present their projects, while others create tri-folds and Flyers. According to Mayor Gayle Brill Mittler, some very hard choices needed to be made as the applications this year were creative and well thought out.

The winner in the art category is a new town magazine that will feature special events and characteristics of the borough and will be free of charge. The winner in the environment category is a project that will purchase and replant native trees in the open spaces in the borough.

The health and wellness winner is an organization that provides food and other supplies to the local Community Food Bank, while the culture and diversity winner will buy and distribute Books to children who could not otherwise afford them.
