An upcoming event in Edison will either be great fun or totally miserable, depending on one’s point of view.

The Freezing Cold Hash Run has two options for runners: the five-mile Eagle Trail, or the Turkey Group Run. The first choice leads through the woods where it will be possible for runners to encounter wildlife, or fall off a cliff, while the second is much tamer. According to the tongue-in-cheek advice from race organizers, it is possible for those choosing the longer run to slip on the ice and break a leg, run into a tree branch that pokes an eye out, step on a buried mustard gas bomb, encounter hunters who are angry that the runners are frightening away the deer, and more.

A hash run is a non-competitive group event that follows an off-road route marked with baking flour. It leads through marshes, swamps, grass, and woods so participants should wear old clothes/shoes.

After the race, the survivors will enjoy free beer at a secret party. The race is also a food drive for charity, and anyone who wants to participate is encouraged to put on a skull shirt, tie their sneakers, and get in on the year’s most unpredictable event. The Hash Run is January 6, and starts near Edison station. The exact location will be emailed once people register. Organizers say to look for the Hash skull banner at the course start, which they can create using banner printing.
