Although many places have called off Halloween events for 2020, Edison officials are planning to hold an in-person celebration, though with many safeguards.
The Edison Recreation Department, along with the Edison Council and Mayor Thomas Lankey, recently announced that a Halloween Costume Parade is now on the schedule, to take place at the James Elder Park Soccer Field.
However, Lankey warned that whether or not the parade takes place will depend on the status of the health crisis at the time. Edison schools will resume in-person classes shortly before the date of the parade. If there are few or no COVID cases, the event will proceed. However, if the number of cases among children of school age is high, it is likely the community will cancel the parade.
Officials decided to hold the parade because so many other events have been canceled, including the city's traditional harvest fest. However, recent guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest most social gatherings should not be held.
Safety precautions include keeping families six feet apart, within marked areas. Volunteers will assist participants to form smaller circles, so they can “parade” to display their costumes. Everyone is required to wear a mask, and hand sanitizer stations will be placed throughout the field. The town will distribute craft items and candy in sealed Bags to everyone.
The parade is scheduled for October 24, and pre-registration is required. Banner printing can provide sturdy decorations for outdoor events like this.
