Edison officers get new bikes

Bicycle patrol officers in Edison have new equipment to help them respond more quickly when needed.

The Edison Police Department recently announced that the bike patrol will now be equipped with all-terrain power bikes, manufactured by RECON. The machines have electric motors that are very powerful, an LCD control, and lithium ion batteries. It is up to the rider how much or how little they use the motorized assist. Some models can go up to 50 miles on a single charge, at speeds as high as 30 miles per hour.

Thomas Bryan, Edison's chief of police, said the department is always trying to provide the latest tools available to their officers, so they can protect both residents and visitors to Edison more effectively. He added that it is particularity gratifying to be able to supply first-class equipment like the RECON bikes at no charge to the taxpayers. They were paid for with criminal forfeiture money, which is money law enforcement officers seize from those suspected of wrongdoing.

Bicycle Patrol Officers Shirley Dong and Chris Gadomski are already using the bikes, which cost $4,000 each. Edison had a bike patrol once before, and reinstated it in 2016. The unit is tasked with safeguarding shopping areas, the Menlo Park Mall, the Middlesex Greenway, and other municipal parks.
