Highland Park locals are invited to head downtown this month to help spruce up the area as part of an event called, appropriately enough, Planting Days.
Every year, businesses purchase a variety of plants for placing along the two main downtown thoroughfares, and those that are willing are invited to help with the planting.
The event is being sponsored by Main Street Highland Park and is held for several reasons, including to beautify the downtown area, to bring people downtown, to attract customers to the downtown shopping area, and, last but not least, to bring people in town together for a fun-filled day of hand dirtying as part of an environmentally friendly effort.
More than 150 planters need filling along Raritan and Woodbridge Avenues with plants and flowers. In return for their efforts, participants will receive a T-shirt, and the pride of satisfaction in knowing they have played their part in the area’s green efforts. Families may want to join in the effort together, which should provide an excellent opportunity for picture taking for later use in postcard printing.
This year, Planting Days will take place Thursday May 14, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Saturday, May 16 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Those that wish to participate can go to the Main Street Highland Park office (212 Raritan Ave) to register and to pick up their plants.
