Cultural festival promises fun and color in Edison

A traditional evening of music and dance is coming up in Edison.

The Rex D'Souza Garba will give attendees a chance to experience something new—a Garba, which is a traditional dance from Gujarati, a state in northwestern India. The dance is performed in communal spaces in the village center, and everyone takes part. It is traditionally held during Navratri, a Hindu festival, and in Gujarati, it involves dancing for nine nights. Garba is also often performed at weddings and other events.

The celebration in Edison is much shorter, but just as colorful and meaningful. The leader for the evening is Rex D’Souza, a singer who was born in Mumbai, India. He began singing when he was five, and performing in local gigs when he was 15. His life changed in 2005 when he entered an Indian reality show, “Fame Gurukul.” The premise of the show is to find India’s best singers or performers, and DeSouza’s confidence, charisma, and singing ability led to him winning the title “Mr. Gurukul.” With that as a springboard, he launched a successful international career, as well as singing in Bollywood films.

The Rex D’Souza Garda is scheduled for October 4, beginning at 8.00 pm. The venue is Middlesex College at 2600 Woodbridge Avenue. Sponsors and organizers of events like this will often reach out to printers, asking them to use poster printing methods to create suitable advertising.
