Early days
Westfield dates back to 1720, when the area comprising the old village, now known as the downtown district, and part of the original Elizabethtown Tract, was settled. Luke Watson, Daniel Denton, and John Baily bought the Elizabethtown Tract from Native Americans in 1664. Westfield was first established in 1794 as a township, and then incorporated in 1798. It is one of the first 104 townships established by the New Jersey Legislature.
The history of Westfield and the surrounding area is the charge of the Westfield Historical Society, which operates from the Reeve History & Cultural Resource Center, an 1870s home. The Miller – Cory House Museum is also owned by the Society.
