A grant program was recently launched by the Cumberland Community Foundation that can help Fayetteville and the other eight towns in the County for community projects.
The Foundation will match up to $10,000 that each community raises for these projects. Projects will be chosen by a community advisory committee formed in each town. Planning and expenses will also be awarded to recipients in the amount of $10,000.
According to Executive Director Mary Holmes, this Giving Together Community Challenge is intended for areas that normally do not get grants from the foundation. Fayetteville tends to receive most of the grants from the Foundation as most non-profit groups are located in the town. Therefore, the Foundation realized it needed work harder to get grants throughout the County.
Holmes said the projects which may receive grants can range from providing services to senior citizens or young people or making improvements to a community building. Services can include starting a health program or an after-school tutoring program.
There needs to be at least five people on the community advisory committee and there must be at least one community forum held to get ideas for the projects. Print companies may be used at this point to create mailers that can be sent to the community letting them know about the forums.
Once input from the community is gathered, consensus is reached by the committee on the selected project.
