During the month of April, the Cumberland County Public Library system, based out of Fayetteville, will be taking part in the statewide North Carolina Science Festival for 2016.
First established by two staff members at the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in Chapel Hill in 2010, the festival is designed to introduce fun activities in science, technology, engineering, and math to kids of all ages.
Fewer students are pursuing careers in technology and science despite the increased demand in these fields. Organizers of the festival hope that it will inspire the engineers and scientists of the future by showing them that these fields can be enjoyable and fun.
Among the activities for toddlers and those in pre-school are Lego and Duplo Free Play, celebrations of Earth Day, and story times about tornados and clouds, woodland animals, and other subjects.
Teen science activities include microscopes, geysers, learning how to survive in the outdoors, planting gardens, and tips for surviving a zombie apocalypse.
Special activities are designed for home-schooled children as well, and range from bouncy balls to DNA bracelets. There will also be homework help and a special workshop on algebra.
Flyers and Brochures about the month-long festival will no doubt provide more details about the times and locations of the many activities and highlight their special features.
