Fayetteville organization funds skateboard park

The Friends of the Skateparks Foundation of Fayetteville is partnering with Elizabethtown and spearheading efforts to expand Leinwand Park in Elizabethtown as part of a revitalization project in the downtown area.

The project, which will include construction of a park for skateboard enthusiasts, is expected to open early in the month. The cost for the project is $46,000.

According to Town Manager Eddie Madden, it will be designed for both inline skating and skateboarding, with two ramps that form together as a half-pipe skate park. The size of the skate surface will be 35 feet by 60 feet and have a 4-foot landing structure on each side so as to be to accommodate up to 45 to 50 skaters at one time. Madden said that the varying heights will enable it to be used by all levels of skaters, from novice to advanced.

He added that having the skatepark will provide a safer environment for the skaters as they typically skate on pavement which is hazardous for themselves and others.

Terry Grimble, the director of the Friends of the Skateparks Foundation of Fayetteville, said that the organization was started to help communities build public skate parks, to ensure the ones built are the best possible and will have maximum impact on the community.

The Foundation and the town may be working with a banner printing company to have a banner displayed on the park announcing the opening of the new skateboard area.
