Big festivities held for pool opening
A grand opening celebration was held last Saturday, August 1 for the Westover Aquatics Center in Fayetteville at the Westover Recreation Center.
Among the dignitaries at the opening were the Mayor of Fayetteville, Nat Robertson, who commented that the Aquatics Center was a great success. At a cost of $1.8m, the Center includes a shallow pool for toddlers, a deeper eight-lane pool, and a two-story water slide.
Chalmers McDougald, City Councilman, added that the facility was in response to the city’s need for more recreational facilities and demonstrated that a great deal of progress had been made in responding to those needs.
Juan Brenes, Westover supervisor, echoed the comment saying that it will be a resource for the community, as it will also be able to host swim meets.
A “soft opening” was held on July 31 and some summer camp children have been invited to use the new facility this week so that the staff can get more familiar with operations. Most likely, several local print companies will be asked to help with printing flyers and other materials with more information about hours, and the rules and regulations of the facility, in the upcoming weeks.
The city has another pool at Seabrook Park and is planning to begin construction later this year on a third pool site near the North Regional Branch Library and College Lakes Elementary School.
