In the beginning
In 1795, legendary pioneer Daniel Boone settled in St. Charles County, along with members of his family. Trappers and hunters followed, and during the 1830s farmers and craftsmen from Germany also came to the region. Wentzville developed from these beginnings.
Like many communities throughout the nation, the history of Wentzville is also tied to the railroad, which moved west along with the new settlers. William M. Allen gave the railroad land to build a station to serve the growing community. However, he stipulated that if the depot was razed or moved, the property would revert to his descendants. His shrewd measure insured the station would remain in Wentzville, as would the railroad, which would stabilize the new town.
The railroad (the St. Louis, Kansas City & Northern) came to Wentzville in 1856, and the first train came through a year later. Mr. Erasmus Livingston Wentz, a friend of Allen's, supervised the building, and Allen honored Wentzville's efforts by giving the new town his name.

Growth and development
Between 1850 and 1880, the area around Wentzville primarily grew tobacco, and for the next few decades, the community grew slowly and steadily, remaining mostly agricultural. However, in 1980 General Motors built an auto assembly plant in Wentzville, and brought over 6,000 jobs to the town. The factory makes vans, and remains the community's largest employer. Wentzville also has a number of small businesses across the retail, professional, and services sectors.

Honoring the fallen
Wentzville is the site of a memorial to those who served in Vietnam. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Wentzville is the first such tribute in the country, and was first dedicated in 1967. At that time, the memorial was a tree of lights, but in 1984, it was replaced by a permanent column, which remains to this day. Every year, those participating in the “Run for the Wall” event, that honors Vietnam veterans and ends up in Washington, D.C., makes a stop at the Wentzville site.

Wentzville is home to the Greater St. Louis Renaissance Faire, the St. Louis Pirate Festival and the St. Charles County Fair, all of which are held at the St. Charles County Fairgrounds, located in the town.
