Wentzville volunteers recently held their local Operation Christmas Child kickoff event at St. Paul’s Evangelical Free Church.

The kickoff event is just the start to an effort that lasts several weeks to help children overseas who do not have the resources to obtain items they need on a daily basis.

Operation Christmas Child is a nationwide effort sponsored by Samaritans’ Purse International Relief. The organization helps guide donors with what they need to do to pack a shoebox full of surprises for a needy child. Donors can select whether they want to pack a box for a boy or a girl, and select an age category. The group offers a variety of suggestions on the type of gifts to pack as well.

The operation lasts throughout the fall season and there will be a variety of collection locations for residents to drop off their items. Organizers use shoeboxes to fill up with recommended items for the children. These items can include more than just toys, as many donors include school supplies, toiletries, and personalized notes to help encourage the children. Those wishing to contribute could work with a local printing company to obtain multiple colorful Copies of personalized notes to include in the Boxes.

Collection of the shoebox gifts will take place between November 14 and 21. After collection, the boxes will be sent overseas to children in areas affected by poverty, war or natural disasters. Those who donate boxes can make an online donation and obtain a tracking label so they will be able to monitor the destination of their gift.
