Local fundraiser helps raise funds for hearing impaired

The Travelers Protective Association (TPA) held what it hopes will be a yearly 5K Walk/Run to benefit its scholarship Trust for the hearing impaired.

The ‘Hear to Win’ 5K raised $2500 for Trust. TPA was founded in 1890 and is located in St. Charles, which is midway between St. Louis and Wentzville. The organization is located in 29 states.

The various businesses that sponsored the event likely helped promote participation by hanging up Flyers notifying customers of their support. With the support of the businesses and participation by residents, the fundraiser raised more than just money; it helped raise awareness of the support TPA provides to the community.

The Scholarship Trust for the Hearing Impaired was created in 1975 and gives financial aid to residents who are hard of hearing or deaf. TPA uses grants to help purchase mechanical devices for those needing them and also provides funds for speech classes and medical treatment. The money is also used to provide education and interpreters. Since its inception, the Trust has helped more than 5,000 recipients with the over $2m it has raised.

TPA’s Chief Administrative Officer, Albert M. Shoemaker, Jr., thanked the community for its support of this first annual event and stated that those involved are already looking forward to growing this fundraiser each year. He noted that many will be fortunate to benefit from the event.
