Soccer program set to kick start

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, and now St. Peters' young people can learn how to play it.

A coaching program called HappyFeet and the Rec-Plex gym are teaming up to offer classes for children in the St. Peters area.

The Rec-Plex, Rec-Plex South and all facilities together total 236,000 square feet, and provide room for all kinds of sports activities. The Rec-Plex feature an indoor track, ice rinks, a natatorium for diving and swimming, and an array of fitness machines. It opened in 1994 and was expanded in 2007, and has twice hosted Olympic trials.

HappyFeet is a nationwide organization that introduces children as young as two years of age to the world of soccer. It uses stories and songs specifically created for very young children, and limits play to short sessions. The overall aim of the program is to help children develop healthy exercise habits they will continue all their lives.

The upcoming HappyFeet leagues will be held at Rec-Plex South, in the multipurpose gym, for seven consecutive Saturdays. The sessions begin November 8, and the cost is $89 for each child. Registration is required, since there is limited space; interested parties can sign up in person at the Rec-Plex or online.

Rec-Plex could work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for St. Peters' residents, telling them about the program.
