What's Happening in Arnold, MO…

Arnold youth learn about making tapestry

Youngsters in Arnold interested in the art of tapestry-making will soon have an opportunity to learn from one of the masters. Staff at the Arnold Branch of the Jefferson County Library will be giving a presentation of the work of Malian master craftsman Abdoulaye Konate next month.

Attendees will first learn a little about the artist and his work. After the presentation, guests will be given the opportunity to create a project of their own based on Konate's artwork "Coucher du Soleil au Sahel" (Sunset in the Sahel).

Konate's work is unique in that instead of simply mixing textiles to create pleasing visual imagery in his wall hangings, he attempts to weave aesthetics with subject matter to create a story of sorts, sort of like dyed and woven poems. When making their own projects, the children will be encouraged to incorporate something from their own lives to create unique works of art.

Proud parents of these budding artists sometimes take pictures of the child holding his/her artwork to local print shops to be made into yearly family calendars or include in family newsletters.

The class will be open to children between the ages of 6 and 14 and will take place in the branch's Arnold Meeting Room, 1701 Missouri State Road, from 4:30 to 5:15 pm on October 15th. Signup is required.
