Residents of Oakdale who would like to learn more about the joys of keeping a flock of chickens in their own backyard will soon be able to learn more about this as part of an upcoming area workshop.
The Backyard Chicken Basics class will be exploring the art of raising poultry in the city. The facilitator for the event will be Bob Lies, who is the co-owner of Egg/Plant Urban Farm Supply and has many years of experience in the field.
Those who attend the session will explore all of the different parts of managing a backyard flock, including getting a permit to raise chickens on their property. They will also discuss the varieties best suited to this setting, building a coop, health issues and nutrition, cold weather care, protecting the birds from predators, and how they can be helpful in the garden.
The participants will have time to ask questions, and they will also have some hands-on time with some friendly chickens. The registration fee is $20, and all who are interested are welcome. A printing services provider will be able to supply manuals and other materials to distribute to the students in a class like this.
The workshop has been scheduled for March 31, and it will be held at Egg/Plant Urban Farm Supply, and further details can be found on its website.
