Oakdale event to offer trees for free

An event that can trace its roots back to the 1800s, Arbor Day has since come to be synonymous with environmental service, and Oakdale will be one of the cities joining in the fun this year.

The city will be hosting its annual tree giveaway, where the goal is to help expand its forest urban canopy. A grand total of 200 saplings will be distributed for planting, and four species have been chosen.

The organizers of the day explained that those who pre-register will be able to pick up one tree to plant, and this will take place in a drive through style. They will need to sign up in advance, and each address or household will be able to reserve one tree.

To help give these baby trees the best start in life, watering Bags may be pre-ordered for pickup on the same date. Master Gardeners will be on hand to offer tips and advice. Instruction sheets and other learning materials for an activity can be obtained from area Stationery printers.

Along with the sapling distribution, the public is invited to bag or box up any sensitive documents they may have and bring them along for shredding. This community shred will be set up in the parking lot at city hall, and signage will be posted. More details will be released about this service as its scheduled date draws closer.

This chance to help make Oakdale even or green will be offered on April 27th in Walton Park. More details, and instructions for pre-ordering a tree can be found on the city's website.
