Peter Scontras has been appointed the first City Historian of Saco.
This is a volunteer position that has a term of three years and will provide assistance of an informational and advisory nature to the staff of the city, the City Council, and other advisory bodies. The city historian will also offer educational programs to the schools in Saco and to the public and work with the City Administrator to develop these programs each year.
The programs to be offered by the City Historian are currently under development. The plan is to work with staff to develop historical content that can be displayed on the website, on social media, and through newsletters; connect students to the history of Saco; create and implement walking tours; respond to questions from institutions and individuals regarding the history of Saco; and work with the City Administrator to advise committees and boards.
More information about such programs and other efforts can be disseminated throughout a city with flyer printing.
Scontras is a native of Saco and has been involved in the community for decades. He attended the public schools of the city and taught English Language Arts at Saco Middle School for 33 years. He has been passionate about history his entire life.
Scontras feels it is important for a City Historian to be accessible in the community and he will be out and about the city on a regular basis.
