What's Happening in Saco, ME…

Saco drive-in reopens in new location

The oldest drive-in theater in Maine has now re-opened at a new location.

News of such special openings is often made known throughout a region with poster printing.

The Aquaboggan Water Park is the new home of the Saco Drive-In and is across the street from the original home of the theater on Route 1. The Saco Drive-In was at that location for 83 years and closed last year when the property was sold.

Soon after learning about the sale, Aquaboggan said it was getting permits from the city to relocate the theater to the park. Ethan Mongue, general manager of Aquaboggan, said that they purchased the equipment and moved the drive-in across the street. He added that a new screen had to be built as the original was not to be moved but the Water Park renovated the parking lot and added booths for tickets.

He said the goal was to preserve as much of the original drive-in as possible. Mongue said that work is being done to refinish the sign. In addition, the Water Park still has many of the old posts that will be used up front in the traditional parking area.

Films to be shown are announced two weeks in advance. Only one ticket needs to be purchased per vehicle. The gate opens at 7:15 pm, with the first show starting at approximately 8:45 pm.
