Saco band holds fundraiser to gather shoes

The band at the Saco Middle School is undertaking a fundraiser of collecting unwanted footwear from members of the community.

Nicole Wise, director of the band, said that they are looking for new or gently used shoes, including high heels, sneakers and cleats, slippers, and flip flops. Fundraisers such as this are often promoted throughout a community through banner printing services.

The plan is to collect 7,500 pairs of shoes. Funds2Orgs will be receiving the footwear and will create an inventory for small business owners in emerging countries. These businesses will then repair, clean, and use the shoes for other purposes and sell them for a profit. This inventory will enable business owners to earn money and provide for their families.

After the Saco Middle School gives the shoes to Funds2Orgs, the organization will evaluate what it has received and write a check to the band. Wise said the band will use the funds for supplies and transportation to various events. Wise added that this fundraiser helps other people as well as the band itself.

Funds2Orgs claims that in the United States alone, over 600 million pairs of shoes are thrown away each year. There are just two requirements for the donated shoes – they must be in pairs and in good condition, with no tears or holes.

Donations will be accepted by the band until December 16.
