Maine Water Company plans to build a new water treatment facility in Biddeford on the Saco River.
The original water treatment facility that was built in 1884 will be replaced by a new 35,000-square-foot one, and services the communities of Biddeford, Old Orchard Beach, Saco, and the Pine Point area of Scarborough for the next 100 years.

It was determined by engineers that constructing a new facility would be more cost effective than renovating the existing one. Benefits of the new facility include being more energy efficient, having updated technology that will be able to meet the increasingly strict water quality standards, and lower long-term cost of ownership. The new facility is also planned to be built at a higher elevation to help reduce the risk of flooding.
President of Maine Water, Rick Knowlton, said that great attention in the design was given to the site plan to minimize the effects on the Saco River and on the wetlands. State and federal permits have been filed with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and are the next steps in the development of this project.
