In 2003, Hamel became a member of the Saco Fire Department and became an important member of the department as he was fast promoted through the ranks. He has been both a provider of emergency management services and a firefighter, and recently was deputy chief of emergency management services (EMS).
Prior to joining the Saco Fire Department, Hamel worked in EMS and firefighting in Vermont for 10 years. He moved to Maine so he could earn an associate’s degree in allied health and paramedicine from Southern Maine Community College.
John Bohenko, city administrator, said of Hamel:
“His commitment to personal growth and excellence is evident not only in his personal achievements but also in his efforts to elevate his colleagues and the department. We are confident that Chief Hamel will continue to uphold the high standards of service and leadership that our community has come to expect.”
Hamel said that he has always viewed EMS and the services of the fire department as a way to serve the community and help people when they need it the most. He will begin his new position on Friday November 1.
