Hannaford Supermarkets has donated $250,000 to The Ecology School in Saco to educate students and adults about growing their own food and helping to fight hunger in the state.
This donation will enable the school to bring educational gardens to more locations and expand its mission. News of such donations and their benefits for a school and the wider community are often made known with poster printing.
The Ecology School is a non-profit organization that offers educational programs on the environment, food, and science to over 3,000 students from across the Northeast each year. These programs are hands-on and include lessons on food systems, which teach students about the energy involved in making the food they eat every day.
The director of advancement and community partnerships at The Ecology School, Leanna Bonds, said the donation will enable the school to continue its work in growing its produce, and expanding its partnerships with local food banks in the area by enabling it to grow more produce.
The director of external communication at Hannaford, Ericka Dodge, explained that the school brings together adults, kids, and students in a unique way, providing hands-on opportunities to help them understand where their food comes from. Dodge said this is important to the team at Hannaford.
Dodge added that the company is proud to support The Ecology School in making a difference for those who face hunger in Maine.
