A project to document historic buildings in downtown Biddeford and surrounding areas of the city is underway, courtesy of the Biddeford Historic Preservation Commission.
This may be of interest to residents of nearby Saco who have a fondness for history and architecture.
The project is called an Architectural Survey. Kleinfelder, Northeast, Inc. is conducting the survey and is a consultant hired by the city through a competitive request for proposal (RFP) process. A grant administered by the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, the Department of the Interior, and the National Park Service is partially supporting the survey.
Next fall, the consultant will be working in the neighborhoods in downtown Biddeford to photograph each building, object, or structure (such as a statue), and document details about its construction, architectural style, and age. A narrative and a record will be created by the survey, which the Historic Preservation Commission will use in its work to provide better protection for historic resources in Biddeford. Local Print shops may also get involved in such projects by creating Flyers and Brochures with more information.
Biddeford has a wide range of historic buildings, dating back to the 1700s and continuing through the early 1970s.
The project began November this year and is expected to be completed by September 2023. More info can be found on the City of Biddeford website.
