A new on-demand transportation program for the older members in the community is now underway in Saco. The initiative is run by Age Friendly Saco (AFS).
For now, the program will offer rides to those 65 years of age and older who need to get to medical appointments. Rides need to be arranged five days in advance. Such services are often promoted throughout a community with flyer printing.
A grant from the Maine Community Foundation is making this program possible. Volunteer drivers, who are two women, are courtesy of AmeriCorps and the Saco Parks and Recreation Department. Both women have a great deal of driving experience and an extensive background in the Saco community and its streets and landmarks.
The mission of AFS is to promote active aging by creating opportunities for engagement, health, and safety. The organization partners with the city of Saco and community organizations to help residents to feel empowered to remain and engage in the community as they age.
As such, AFS provides many services to the seniors in the community. The organization partners with the Saco Public Works Department to deliver five gallons of a sand-salty mixture during the winter to those 65 years of age and older who are homebound. Its Tech Handy Helpers provide older residents with tablets as well as assistance in using this technology and accessing reduced Internet costs.
