The ‘cat café’ phenomenon started in Japan and is spreading around the world, and now the feisty furballs have now come to Maryland with the opening of Kittens in Cups in Annapolis.
Hailey Taylor got the idea for her cat cafe when she visited Crumbs & Whiskers, a similar shop in Washington, D.C., in 2016. An artist with a life-long love of cats, she decided to combine her two interests, and Kittens in Cups was born.
Customers are welcome to sit in either of the cafe's two main rooms, one with lounge chairs and fluffy pillow, the other with more traditional tables and chairs. The cats roam where they please in the lounges, but have their own crates in the rear.
Cat lovers can come and hang out with the kitties, but the idea is to find forever homes for them. Taylor works with cats who have been pre-screened by Anne Arundel County's branch of the SPCA. The cats at the cafe are chosen because they get along well with both people and animals. Since she opened early in March of 2017, three cats have been adopted.
Businesses like this can benefit by working with a poster printing company, which could create individual Posters of the cats to be sold to raise funds, or used as décor to draw attention to the place.
