Parks and Recreation is the host of a series of concerts throughout Boston neighborhoods this summer, including one upcoming in West Roxbury.
The band for the event is Be Kind Rewind, a phrase that arose when people had VCRs and would sometimes neglect to rewind the tapes before returning them to the video rental store. The VHS format was big in the 1990s, so naturally, Be Kind Rewind plays the hits from that era—specifically, alternative ‘90s music.
Band members say they appreciate the music of this decade and the memories it evokes, as do their audiences. When they realized that a great many people wanted to hear this music, they created a band to play it. Together, the band members have more than 100 years of experience as professional musicians.
The music genres played by Be Kind Rewind include nu-metal, hard rock, rock, one-hit wonders, grunge, industrial, funk, alternative, ska, pop-punk, light rock, acoustic, and anything else that appeals to them.
Among the songs audiences might hear are covers of “Everlong” by the Foo Fighters, “Longview” by Green Day, Monster Magnet’s “Space Lord,” and “Fly Away” by Lenny Kravitz.
Be Kind Rewind will appear at Billings Field, 369 Lagrange Street, on Monday, July 15 at 7.00 pm. The concert is free. When local events like this are planned, organizers often use flyer printing to create handouts for the neighborhood.
