An upcoming festival will feature popular ethnic food.
St. Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church is organizing a “taste of Greece,” a mini-gyro festival that will feature gyro wraps, Greek fries, and loukoumades. The wraps are made with seasoned pork, onions, fresh tomatoes, and creamy tzatziki sauce, tucked inside a piece of warm pita bread. Tzatziki is one of the staples of Greek cuisine, a refreshing condiment made of Greek yogurt, garlic, and cucumbers; fresh herbs like dill are sometimes added.
Greek fries are made more flavorful with the use of seasonings and toppings. Seasonings traditionally used include a mix of onion powder, garlic powder, drilled dill, dried oregano, black pepper, and salt. Toppings can include fresh parsley, red onion, or crumbles of feta cheese. The aforementioned tzatziki can be used as a dipping sauce.
Dessert is another Greek classic, Loukoumades, which are balls of dough fried to a golden brown then given a drizzle of honey, and finally a sprinkle of cinnamon. This delicious menu comprises common Greek street food. People are welcome to come to the festival for their meal or order it to go and enjoy their treats at home.
The tasty event is scheduled for May 10 at St. Nectarios, which was established in 1974 and is located at 2 Robert Street in Roslindale, about a mile from West Roxbury. Organizers of events like this will often use flyer printing to create handouts with recipes for the treats.
