A musician who thrives on contrasts is coming to West Roxbury.
Jason Robinson is a composer, flutist, saxophonist, educator, and scholar. His music is based in traditional jazz but has been influenced by many other genres, and has been called “rugged and scintillating” by the New York Times. He works successfully in the overlapping spaces between experimentalism and tradition, electronics and acoustics, and composition and improvisation.
Originally drawn to the creative music and jazz of the post-1960s era, he is known for bringing together various jazz styes like bebop and avant-garde with the type of improvisation embraced by artists like Duke Ellington and John Coltrane.
Robinson is not coming to West Roxbury by himself; he is bringing the Janus Ensemble along. The group differs in size depending on the concert planned, varying from a quartet to an 11-piece ensemble. The group’s members live throughout the United States, from a small New England town to New York City to California. At present, the ensemble comprises reedists Oscar Noriega, JD Parran, and Marty Ehrlich, tubist Marcus Rojas, tubist/trombonist Bill Lowe, trombonist Michael Dessen, percussionists George Schuller and Ches Smith, bassist Drew Gress, guitarist Liberty Ellman, and pianists Angelica Sanchez and Joshua White.
The performance is scheduled for October 19 at 8.00 pm, at the Theodore Parker Unitarian Universalist Church on 1859 Centre Street in West Roxbury. Organizers of events like this will often contact a Print company, who will use poster printing to devise and create advertising for the show.
