What's Happening in Fitchburg, MA…

Presentation to address challenges faced by urban horticulturists

Growing plants in an urban environment presents special challenges to home horticulturalists, and an upcoming Fitchburg event will take a page from Mother Nature.

An online presentation hosted by a local landscape associate will explore how the conditions found in urban settings require careful consideration when choosing which plants to use. There is no cost to register for the Zoom-based class, and it is open to anyone interested.

The workshop will introduce a variety of factors to take into consideration when planting an urban garden. These range from depleted or contaminated brownfield soils to the microclimates that may be found on an apartment balcony. The importance of taking cues from nature and the value of native plants will be emphasized. Everyone will be encouraged to expand their list of “go to” species, and the session’s anticipated run time is one and a half hours.

Many people are becoming more interested in home horticulture, and online workshops provides a way for the public to learn from the comfort of their own home. A flyer printing company will be able to prepare a selection of educational materials to distribute during a live event, and they can also be mailed out to those who take part virtually.

This opportunity to learn how to use Mother Nature as a guide when it comes to choosing urban plants will be held on May 4. Everyone is asked to be logged in by 7:00 pm.
