The world of fungi is full of surprises, and these organisms will be the stars of the show during an information session.
Science has made many discoveries about mushrooms and other fungi in recent years. The activity, led by Certified Field Naturalist Jonathan Kranz, will provide an opportunity to learn the latest in the field of mycology, or the study of fungi.
The session will explore how mushrooms, which are the fruiting bodies of fungi, are only the tip of the iceberg. The attendees will find out how much of the life cycle of these organisms is hidden, and also how they play a valuable role in nutrient recycling and the growth of many plants. Everyone will learn how to identify some of the more common species, as well as foraging tips. The activity has enough space for up to 20 learners.
Foraging can be a fun way to experience nature, and may also be a step towards living a sustainable lifestyle. A workshop can offer a way to get started, and ID tip sheets, species checklists, Copies of spore prints, and other materials for a mycology-related activity can be ordered from area brochure printing companies, along with promotional Pens.
This introduction to the mysterious world of mushrooms is scheduled for 6:00 pm on Thursday, June 12. It will be offered at the Fitchburg Public Library at 166 Boulder Drive.
