Unique exhibit opens reflecting history of Cape Ann through art

The Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester and the Montserrat College of Art in Beverly are collaborating on a new 15-week class titled ‘Spin-Off’.

The class focuses on the connections between the environment, the economy, and the art in the region, with learning taking place both inside and outside the classroom. Students examine the objects and art at the Museum, and tour the landscape of the area that has inspired industry and creativity in the area for hundreds of years. The spinning off is the culmination of visual responses to this immersive experience.

Professor Diane Ayott of Montserrat designed this course for upper classmen and introduces students to the history of Cape Ann through the collection in the Museum. Teaching Associate, Kevin Lucey, a recent graduate of Montserrat; Courtney Richardson, former Director of Education at the Museum; and Museum docent and long-time associate of Montserrat Trina Smith are also involved in this course.

An opening reception for the student work will be this Friday, November 20, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at the Museum in Gloucester and the exhibit will run until December 3.

Kale Baker, Kelly Schultz, Sebastian Sawyer, LiAnn Natter, Kendall Hanselmann, Bri Bain, and Theresa Dennehy are the students whose work will be in the exhibit. The Museum and the College could consider creating colorful Banners announcing this unique exhibit and opening reception to the community.
