Student and renowned author collaborate on Spanish version of book

Jennifer Bryan, a well-known children’s author and educator, visited Shore Country Day School in Beverly recently along with eighth grader Alba Clarke, who translated her book ‘The Different Dragon’ into Spanish.

They held an all-day assembly, explained to students about their unique collaboration and read from both the Spanish and English versions of the book. Afterwards, they signed Copies of the book in the Winslow Building.

Clarke, who was born in Spain and is bilingual, had expressed an interest in translation when she was in seventh grade at Shore. Pamela Torres, her Spanish teacher, suggested looking at ‘The Different Dragon’, which is a bedtime story for children about a curious young boy who helps one of his two parents create a magical tale.

Clarke and Torres were then able to work together during Clarke’s regularly scheduled Spanish classes. They brainstormed ideas that would enhance Clarke’s learning and then emailed their pitch to Bryan.

Bryan said she had been asked over the years to create a version of the book in Spanish. It has been a highlight of her career to see the excitement in Clarke about translating the book, and the willingness of Torres to support her effort.

No doubt a Print company will be selected to create the Spanish version of the book, which is illustrated by Danamarie Hosler.
