The Beverly Public Library will be holding its annual poetry contest for middle and high school students who attend school or live in Beverly.
Students can submit their entries beginning early next month, and can put forward up to three poems. Each needs to have a title and be original work. Poems can be submitted online or on paper. A paper submission needs to have the name of the student, be typed in Times New Roman with a font size of 12, and not contain any illustrations.
Poems will be judged by a panel of local published poets. The judges have a month to read all the poems and select the finalist, who are contacted by the librarian and invited to read their poems aloud to the audience in a ceremony in mid-April. All the poems that are read at the ceremony are published in a booklet made by a local Print shop and distributed at the ceremony. Each year’s booklet also becomes part of the permanent collection of the library.
Two age categories, grades six through eight, and grades 9 through 12, are awarded cash prizes based on their placement of first, second, and third prizes and honorable mention.
Poems can be submitted starting Monday, January 6 and will be accepted until Friday, February 28 at 4:00 pm. The Poetry Contest Awards Ceremony and Reception will be held on Wednesday, April 24.
