Last week, the change in the name of Longfellow Park on Middlebury Lane in Beverly was unanimously approved by the city council to honor Pete Frates, a resident of Beverly with ALS who helped to launch last year’s Ice Bucket Challenge.
It all began with an online petition a month ago that was signed by over 1,000 people including that Mayor Mike Cahill to change the name of the neighborhood park of Frates to Pete’s Park.
Now efforts are underway to raise funds so the park can be a showpiece in the neighborhood and the city fitting for the Frates’ name. The goal is that the park can be a multi-use, integrated and inclusive park that meets all the standards of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of accessible design. There will be a play structure designed for ADA compliance, a half-court basketball court, a shaded picnic area, and tennis courts to be resurfaced.
The idea is to make it a park where Pete can visit so that he watch his daughter Lucy play with his nieces and other children in the neighborhood.
People in the community are now working to create an online link and with local Print companies for providing more information about how donations can be made towards the efforts to rebuild the park.
